The Story Behind the ‘I Wanna …’ Series
When I heard the song All My Friends by Channel Tres, with the lyrics “I wanna see all my friends at once” I thought: what a great idea! How much fun that would be.
My birthday was coming up, and there’s a fabulous roof deck on top of my apartment building, so I decided to throw myself a birthday party, and invite all of my friends. It turned out to be one of those unforgettable nights, truly memorable.
I had created a large canvas with the words “I Wanna See All My Friends At Once” as a tribute to the evening, something that everyone could take selfies in front of. After the party was over, I hung the canvas up in my apartment, where it greets me with good vibes every day and I’m reminded of the warmth and happiness from the friendships in my life.
I love the colors in this piece. I picked paint colors that made me the happiest that resulted in a vibrant, blend of positive emotion. I was inspired to take close-up shots of sections of the canvas, capturing smaller moments within the greater whole.
These photos became the foundation for the I Wanna … series and on a cold Winter’s day recently, I looked at these images and felt the warmth and joy coming through the colors. I wanted to share this feeling—with the intention that these details would inspire happy thoughts for anyone who engaged with them.
Abstract art is an open-ended way of storytelling. Using shapes, colors, and gestures, I hope to spark the imagination of the viewer so that they think about their own narratives.
I truly hope you enjoy the I Wanna … series as much as I’ve enjoyed creating it.
